In October 2022, Switzerland unveiled a redesigned passport that seamlessly blends aesthetic elegance with advanced security features, reflecting the nation’s rich heritage and innovative spirit. The Geneva-based design agency RETINAA spearheaded this transformation, aiming to redefine the visual narrative of Swiss identity documents for the 21st century.
A Journey Through Switzerland’s Landscapes
Central to the design is an imaginative journey along Switzerland’s waterways, symbolising the country’s topographical diversity and the vital role of water in shaping its landscapes. This journey begins at the Alpine peaks, traverses through all 26 cantons, and extends outward to the global stage, inviting passport holders to embark on their own explorations.
The interior pages of the passport are adorned with illustrations depicting mountains and waterways unique to each canton. Under ultraviolet light, additional features such as topographic contour lines and architectural landmarks become visible, showcasing Switzerland’s rich cultural heritage and history.
Innovative Design Elements and Security Features
The passport’s cover maintains the iconic red hue but introduces a contemporary twist with embossed, undulating patterns. Notably, when multiple passports are placed side by side, these patterns align to form a continuous design, symbolising the unity of Swiss citizens.
Incorporating the latest security technologies, the passport features a polycarbonate data page containing the holder’s photograph and personal information, safeguarded by advanced security elements to prevent counterfeiting. The design harmoniously integrates these security measures without compromising aesthetic appeal.
Celebrating the Swiss Abroad
For the first time, the passport dedicates a page to the “Fifth Switzerland,” acknowledging the approximately 780,000 Swiss nationals living abroad. This inclusion underscores the nation’s recognition of its global diaspora and their integral role in the Swiss community.
Typography and Cartographic Inspiration
The design draws inspiration from Switzerland’s esteemed cartographic tradition, particularly the work of Eduard Imhof, a renowned Swiss cartographer. Collaborating with Swiss Typefaces, RETINAA developed a custom typeface that complements the passport’s visual narrative, further enhancing its distinctiveness.
Through this thoughtful redesign, the Swiss passport transcends its functional purpose, embodying the nation’s identity, cultural richness, and commitment to innovation.
