In terms of iconic figures of graphic design, they don’t really come much bigger than Ken Garland. From his 1964 manifesto First Things First to his design work and roles as a writer, teacher and educator, Garland has been integral to the shape of twentieth century design and has defiantly argued for human-focused, ethical practice in the discipline.

His poster for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament’s famous Easter march in 1962 features in Kemistry Gallery’s pop-up exhibition100 Years of Graphic Design, which you can catch at Protein Studios until 15 March. In honour of the occasion, Unit Editions has kindly given us a copy of its 2012 monograph Ken Garland: Structure and Substance, which details the designer’s extensive body of work from student sketches to his most recent photographic projects. Now in his eighties, Garland shows no signs of slowing down.
