This week we’re celebrating the artists involved in Kemistry Gallery’s current exhibition 100 Years of Graphic Design with a series of giveaways, including these phenomenal original woodcuts by Düsseldorf-based artist Roman Klonek.

At a time when digital filters are two a penny, people that painstakingly create work by hand are all the more special. Roman Klonek is one of these people. Born in Poland but now based in Düsseldorf, Germany, Klonek creates his recognisable illustrations, with their blocks of bright colours and weird and wonderful characters, using woodcut printing, meticulously carving away at a timber block to create that hard-to-fake texture. What’s even more magic about woodcut is that as you carve away each layer, the previous one is destroyed, meaning once you’ve printed the final colour, there’s never a chance of a reprint down the line.

With this craftsmanship in mind, we were absolutely blown away when Klonek offered us three  original woodcuts to give away as part of our special Objekts of Desire series celebrating the artists involved in Kemistry Gallery’s current exhibition 100 Years of Graphic Design. Each mounted on woodplates with white sidebars, we have three woodcuts to give away: Mangagirl with Potatonose (35.4x46.4cm), Woodpecker (23x30cm) and True That (36.5x41.5cm).

For a chance to win one of these incredible artworks, send an email to giveaway@grafik.net with the name of the woodcut you’d like to win as the subject header and an answer to this question: In which Polish city was Roman Klonek born? Clue: you might want to take a look on his website – plus have a nosey while you’re there, you won’t be disappointed. We’ve got lots of Objekts of Desire posts to come this week so make sure to include the correct subject header so you’re entered into the right draw. Deadline is 30 March 2015.
