Stretching along America’s pacific shore from LA to Vancouver, the West Coast is lined with a string of Modernist houses that, when built, pushed the boundaries of what a home could be. Designed to extend into the landscape, the West Coast Modernist architectural vocabulary is impressive yet accessible, defined by full-height glass, expansive open-plan rooms and, unusually for this type of architecture, natural materials such as wood.

To accompany the UK launch of Coast Modern – a documentary about the pioneers of this bold architectural vision – directors Mike Bernard and Gavin Froome have commissioned London-based studio Build to create a limited-edition screenprint. Using the same black and magenta palette used for the film’s promotional poster in 2012, Build has also created five typographic posters inspired by words and phrases featured in the film.

Buildʼs founder and creative director Michael C. Place says of the project, “Coast Modern is a wonderfully shot and paced documentary that complements the grace and beauty of the buildings it portrays.” A pop-up exhibition of the prints, plus a screening of the film with an introduction by its directors will open at the Mead Carney gallery in central London, on 14 June.Mead Carney, 45 Dover Street, London
