Check out index A to Z in our flick-though film – a book which collates the best bits from the alternative magazine, confirming just how vital index was to shaping indie culture.
Those with their ear to the underground in the late nineties will be well aware of index magazine. For the rest of us too young or too square to remember (this Grafik writer included) the achingly hip magazine was published between 1996 and 2005 and featured interviews with unsung talents of the time, including artist Elizabeth Peyton, Alexander McQueen, Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hana and Daniel Day-Lewis. For an example of how ahead of the curve the editorial team were, they chose to interview a child-like Carey Affleck in 1998 (and send Terry Richardson to take the photos no less) when everyone else was still hyping about Good Will Hunting star (and older brother) Ben.
Packed with insightful interviews with the likes of actress Isabella Rossellini, musicians Cat Power and the Boredom’s Yoshimi P-We and counter-culture film-maker John Waters, the book brings together some of the best interviews the magazine put out over its nine-year run, and boasts some incredibly stark photography – largely down to Richardson. Take a look at its fittingly indie design in our flick-through film.
