This Australian wunderkind is both a graphic designer and a music producer, two passions which combine perfectly in his beguiling record cover work.
What are the best and worst aspects of what you do?
Both the best and worst part is not knowing where I'll be or what I'll be working on in a week’s time. Sometimes it’s quite frightening. Other days I wouldn't have it any other way.
What’s been your most interesting creative collaboration?
I'm working on a record label/ arts project with good friend Chet Faker. Its called Detail. We’re putting out some records and making some art. It’s still early days but there are some exciting things on the horizon.
How do you develop your concepts?
Pump them up and see if they bounce.
If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
In a fantasy world, Miles Davis. Realistically, Warp Records/Films. Those guys have got it covered.
What’s been the biggest turning point in your career?
I haven't had a big turning point. Maybe its around the corner. Everything has been a slow incline — chipping away each day, trying to make the newest piece more engaging than the last. Baby steps.
What’s the secret to a successful album cover treatment?
I don't think there is a secret. Though in saying that, I've found that over-thinking a job isn't good. Nine times out of ten, the work I enjoy most was done the quickest. Don't over cook it.
What’s the most recent photo you’ve taken with your phone?
A photo of Matthew Justice wearing a psychedelic tie-die indian t-shirt and a military inspired biker helmet playing with an eight-week old puppy on green grass, doused in the light and warmth of a summer sunset.
