Ordinary is a brand new magazine by Max Siedentopf and Yuki Kappes which features twenty artists taking inspiration from the most mundane of objects. Here Max picks five of his favourite spreads from issue one, which comes complete with a plastic knife, fork and spoon.
Ordinary is a quarterly fine art photography magazine which takes a refreshing look at the mundane objects around us. Every issue revolves around one of these ordinary objects, which also comes as an extra inside the magazine. This object is sent to twenty artists from around the world and ask them to add a little extra to the ordinary.
The first issue is all about plastic cutlery. The major items of cutlery are the knife, fork and spoon. On average people couldn’t care less about these disposable plastic tools. A missed opportunity if you ask us.…
Maxime Guyon
Maxime Guyon is the master of super technical packshots. He succesully transformed a cheap piece of plastic into an magesticly surreal, almost outer-space like object. It’s fascinating to see all these fine and beautiful details of such a seemingly mundane object. This seems like something out of a museum and not something you throw away after one use.
Blaise Cepis
This photo was taken by Blaise Cepis. The plastic forks follow the contours of her body almost like a haute-couture piece. It’s almost impossible to believe that you get these forks at McDonalds.
Daniel Eatock
This photo (or rather idea) was contributed by Daniel Eatock. Instead of taking a photo he only sent the idea and instructions for his photo which were: “For my contribution please take a photo of the three utensils on a black background and in photoshop invert the photo so the utensils are black on a white background.” We love the smart and fun simplicity of it. This is probably one of the best examples how you can easily change the ordinary into something extraordinary.
Thomas Mailaender
Thomas Mailaender decided to punch out his dutch intern Tommy’s teeth out. It was worth it. We Make Carpets
The last photo in the magazine was made by We Make Carpets. It’s incredible to see how they were able to use something as normal as plastic plastic forks and knives, and create this gigantic masterpiece. If you look closely you will find many beautiful, elegant details, waves and rhythms, something you would never dream of while eating your greasy hotdog at your neighbour’s annual BBQ.
