Join us for Under the Covers, an evening of talks hosted by Grafik as part of this year’s Secret 7” exhibition, where five top designers will discuss their favourite album artwork and how its shaped their approach.
As you’ll no doubt have twigged from our news story earlier in January, the Grafik team is pretty excited about Secret 7” this year. The music-inspired exhibition will include original artworks from 700 established and emerging creatives, who have each designed a sleeve for one of seven tracks. Visitors to the show will have the chance to scoop up these exclusive pieces for a bargainous £50, with all the proceeds going to Nordoff Robbins, a charity which aims to better the lives of vulnerable children and adults via music therapy.
This year the chosen tracks include Dead Flowers by The Rolling Stones, Reflections by Diana Ross & The Supremes, Born Slippy by Underworld, Let Forever Be by The Chemical Brothers, Digital Witness by St Vincent, Go by the Maccabees, and Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel. Just last week Secret 7” announced some of the big names involved, including Sir Peter Blake, Martin Parr, Yoko Ono, Julian Opie, David Shrigley, Bob & Roberta Smith, Mr Bingo, and Stanley Donwood. It looks like 2015 is going to be a high calibre year.
But there’s another reason why we’re particularly excited for Secret 7” this year. On 21 April 2015 we’re taking part in the show’s talks programme, in a live version of our Covershot feature, dubbed Under the Covers. The evening welcomes five top Secret 7” artists – Malcolm Garrett, DR.ME, Pete Fowler, Chrissie MacDonald and Fiction Record’s Lisa Ward – to speak about their all-time favourite record sleeves, paying homage to well-known classics or unearthing little-known gems.
As avid readers will know, we’ve invited graphic designers to rifle through their record collections and wax lyrical about their favourite album artwork since 2009, and now there’s the chance to see them do so in person.
