An obsession with geographic uncertainty and digital destruction characterises the work of this British designer.

How did your interest in working with web media arise?

I was looking for a quick way of merging images of two places together as I was brainstorming for a university project.  As soon as I started playing with Street View I was captivated by the creative possibilities of using Google's geographic tools.  This interest is now branching out into the exploration of other areas of Web media, and how they can be exploited.

What is your most useful tool?

At the moment a combination of an old DV tape camcorder and a compact Canon camera. My most recent design project has involved a lot of physical laying-out and collaging, so I’d have to give a mention to my scanner as well!

What’s been your most interesting creative collaboration?

Working with fellow designer Sam Quinton on the branding for an awards ceremony called NoPomp has been brilliant. The team is extremely varied and includes members of the Design Council, representatives from student bodies and a whole load of other professions which has been a really valuable and interesting experience.

Tell us about a favourite recent project.

I was asked to create some visuals for Ryan Hemsworth, to be used on his tour of the U.S. (See first video below). I’ve been a fan of his work since last year when one of his mixes helped me through a particularly tough deadline. I was given a lot of creative control and was able to explore some more experimental avenues.  I’ve found that some of my best work comes out of play, and this project was a perfect opportunity to do just that.

What’s hanging on your walls?

Some leftover ephemera from Car Park Show (our graduate exhibition), an old T-shirt from when I was about 14 that has some kitsch punk type on it, and a couple of cameras that need new film!

Where do you go for inspiration?

I try to head outside, mostly.  I find I think best when I'm travelling, and I get a lot of inspiration from everyday life and being surrounded by activity.  At the moment, I'm really into the work of Tyrone Lebon, and my old favourites OWT Creative, based in Manchester. However,  I think it's dangerous to rely completely on other art and design work, and I personally try and strike a good balance between observation and research.

What’s the most recent photo you’ve taken with your phone?

Some snaps from a whirlwind trip to Utrecht to see a friend’s film in an animation festival!
