Typography Summer School has released the programme for its New York and London editions this summer, and – as we’ve come to expect – it features the cream of the graphic design crop.
Founded in London by Fraser Muggeridge in 2010, Typography Summer School exists as a space for graduates of graphic design to meet and make the transition from student life to the professional world – while learning plenty about typography. Bringing together leading practitioners to guide the students over the course of a week, the school also acts as a place in which to discuss and debate typography and its place within design and society. Typography Summer School’s success resulted in it growing from being based in London to London and New York in 2013, where it is under the careful guidance of design studio Other Means. It even recently migrated to Melbourne in February 2015 for the Antipodean summer.
After a year off in London last year, the school is back for summer 2015 with tutors made up of London’s top studios and practitioners: APFEL, OK-RM, Mark El-Khatib of Sara De Bondt studio, James Langdon, David Pearson, Paul Barnes of Commercial Type, Fraser Muggeridge himself and design legend Ken Garland. Meanwhile, across the pond in NYC there’s an equally star-studded line-up with Julian Bittiner, James Goggin, Geoff Han, Other Means, Yoonjai Choi, Fraser Muggeridge, Alexander Tochilovsky and Bob Gill all set to lead students through their typographical paces.
The programme for the week involves a series of live projects with real briefs, clients and budgets – being forced to face all those things you can ignore at university must be a little easier with advice from people who have learnt to manage them better than most. Alongside all this are talks from visiting practitioners, seminars and tutorials, film screenings – Helvetica, anyone? – and the chance to pick the minds of some of the leading design practitioners out there.
