In the first of a series of new typography events, iconic designer Alan Kitching invites fans into his workshop for a very personal exploration of his influences.
Ever wanted to see inside the studio of one of UK’s top designers? Now’s your chance. In the first in a new series of events, letterpress expert Alan Kitching is inviting type fans to his South London workshop for a night of discussion around type. Known for his expressive, often colourful posters created using wooden and metal type, Kitching draws on his fifty years in the business from his experimental printing workshop co-established with Anthony Froshaug, his time as partner at studio Omnific, setting up his own practice, establishing Clerkenwell’s The Typography Workshop in 1989 and teaching at the RCA.
The series aims to present Kitching’s vast knowledge in an intimate, hands-on way, using slides and original work from the archive. The first Type Talk (on 19 August) will explore three designers that have had a huge influence on various points of Kitching’s career, icon Alan Fletcher, Pentagram founder Colin Forbes and typographer Anthony Froshaug. It’s a unique experience to snoop about the workshop of a true craftsman.
