The ever-popular East London Comics and Arts Festival returns this weekend with a bumper line-up of talks and workshops and new Masterclass programme – win tickets and a chance to see French design duo Icinori speak in our giveaway.
As we reported on earlier in the year, ELCAF has dramatically upped in scale for the 2015 edition, now spanning over two main sites (Hackney’s The Laundry and neighbouring studios Space) and a satellite location of NOW gallery in Greenwich featuring work by work by the Brighton-based Spanish artist Ricardo Cavolo. One of the benefits of this new found space is a beefed up workshops programme, where you can paint wooden animals with illustrator Margaux Carpentier, learn how to make a comic with Nobrow and Flying Eye art director Ben Newman and make clay sculptures with Day Job collective’s Charlotte Mei, and a series of Masterclasses aimed at professionals. The latter has been run in conjunction with the House of Illustration and features sessions with Alexis Deacon and Atelier Capsule.
The talks programme looks as strong as ever (featuring Icinori, Jillian Tamaki Brecht Vandenbroucke, Henning Wagenbreth, Arnal Ballester, Michael Deforge, Daniela Olejnikova) plus there’s more than 100 other exhibitors, from individual illustrators to international publishing houses. Birmingham-based Flatpack Festival will be on hand to provide a reel of excellent short films, and artist Steven Guarnaccia has warped and morphed a series of everyday objects for Fatherland, an exhibition at Space. And don’t miss Grafik writer Mat Colegate DJing between 5-7pm on 21 June.
The team as ELCAF has kindly given us a weekend pass to the festival (with a +1) and two tickets to the Icinori talk (21 June, 1.45pm) to give away to one lucky reader. Icinori (AKA French design duo Mayumi Otero and Raphael Urwiller) publish incredible pop-up books so intricate in their detail that they immediately inspire a child-like sense of delight. The duo operate as an entirely independent publishing house, so their business know-how and insight into the publishing world will also be invaluable. To be in with a chance of getting into this popular festival for free plus seeing Icinori speak, just send an email with ‘ELCAF’ in the subject box to giveaway@grafik.net, telling us who is ELCAF’s designer-in-residence for the 2015 edition. Deadline is 18 June 2015, and you can find the answer here.
