Sam Winston's famous Dictionary Story has been transformed into a pocket-size edition by APFEL. Here's your chance to win a copy, along with artworks relating to the project.
A Dictionary Story by Sam Winston was born as a tale of words from the dictionary becoming living characters that interacted with each other: “Spring's next victim was Lawless who was rejoicing in being knocked away from such a boring neighbour as Lawful. Lawless landed straight on top of Lawn which suddenly became very unruly. After some time Lawn was no longer and in its place sat Jungle, happily spreading its creepers across the page.”
The book, first published as a small-run limited collectors' edition book in 2009, was a beautifully executed exploration of the playful relationship between narrative and typography, with letters tumbling across the pages imagining the antics of words from the dictionary.
After two sell-out limited editions, A Dictionary Story has now been reprinted in a new version (designed by APFEL) with new word-illustrations by Winston, available at a very purse-friendly price of £15.00. To celebrate this wonderful homage to the love of words and letters, we have a copy of the book and two prints by Sam Winston to give away to a lucky reader
As well as a copy of the new edition of A Dictionary Story, the winner will receive a limited edition letterpress print originally created for the New Yorker and a limited edition poster-format version of the entire text from the original bookwork (see above). To be in with a chance of winning a copy of the book, the New Yorker letterpress print and limited edition poster, send us your own short word poem inspired by the dictionary (send to giveaway@grafik.net, with DICTIONARY in the subject-line before Mon 11 August 2014):
